Botanical Name:  CURCUMA LONGA

India is the major producer & exporter of Turmeric (polished and unpolished). There are various grades of turmeric produced in India based on size, colour and curcumin level.

Use:  Turmeric has many medicinal properties. It acts as an antiseptic and healing agent. It also prevents blood clotting and treats skin diseases. Turmeric is an anticancer agent and it also lower cholesterol. Turmeric is used to add fragrance, colour and aroma to the dishes.

Harvest:  January to March

Varieties of Turmeric fingers in India:  

  1. RAJAPORE AND SANGLI ORIGIN TURMERIC (MAHARASHTRA) :
    • Single and double polished. Medium/Bright yellow in colour
    • Curcumin level 2.0 to 2.5%
    • Good grade size fingers

  2. NIZAMABAD TYPE TERMERIC (ANDHRA PRADESH):
    • Double polished, bright yellow in colour
    • Curcumin level min 2.0%
    • Mixture of small and medium fingers for fairly average grade
    • Grade size: uniform medium size fingers for good grade

  3. ALLEPPEY TYPE FINGER (KERALA) :
    • Farmer grade stone less fingers. colour wooden brownish yellow
    • Polished with high curcumin > 5.0%
    • Turmeric Fingers can be manually re-cleaned for stoneless cargo for premium quality
    • Grade size: mixture of medium and large fingers

  4. ERODE AND SALEM/ MADRAS TYPE TURMERIC (TAMIL NADU) :
    • Single and Double polished. Light and bright yellow in colour
    • Curcumin level min 1.5%
    • Grade size: Mixture of small and medium fingers, uniform medium fingers and large fingers.
